Self Care Skills

Self care skills are those activities which preschoolers do for themselves in everyday life. Preschoolers build these skills from a very young age. Self care skills can be divided into several categories:

  • eating and feeding skills
  • dressing and grooming skills
  • social or socio-emotional skills.

Kids need to have sufficient physical development to competently master the technical stuff of school.

If they can open their school bag, take lids of lunch boxes, get out pens and put their shoes on, it will help them to feel comfortable in the school environment from the beginning.

Self Care Skills for School are:

  • Dressing
  • Tying shoelaces
  • Managing zippers and buttons
  • Opening lunch and snack packets
  • Packing school gear

Children need good posture, muscle tone and fine motor control to begin school.

Preschoolers can focus on their academics if they are able to take care of their personal needs. Allowing your preschoolers to build these self-help skills will help the transition from preschool to kindergarten go smoothly.

A child who is clumsy and can't move well, who is floppy, hasn't got a good pencil grip and can't hold scissors properly is probably going to have some difficulty in their first year of school.
